One of the most common causes of heel pain is plantar fasciitis. This common problem can happen to anyone and the pain can be debilitating.
The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that connects from your heel bone to the ‘ball’ of your foot. It is more prominent in some individuals, and you may actually see it by examining the bottom of your foot while pulling your toes in the upward position. You may notice it is most painful in the morning on your first steps out of bed. This is because as you lay in bed at night the fascia becomes relaxed and attenuated.
Those first steps in the morning are painful as it stretches out again. Often times your shoe gear is a major culprit. The worst types of shoes to wear with this condition are sandals, flat shoes and going barefoot. In fact, without the proper support of the fascia this problem can reoccur. Without support in your shoes, the arch of your foot may flatten, further pulling, stressing, and irritating the plantar fascia where it sticks to the heel bone as depicted in the picture below.
There are several approaches to treating this problem once it is identified. Treatments for plantar fasciitis can include taping, stretching, orthotic inserts, cortisone shots, physical therapy, ESWT and, when all other options have been exhausted, surgery. Don’t ignore that pain in your heel. The sooner you seek treatment, often the better the resolution or outcome.
