Baby's first year, first steps
We enjoyed the article by Dr. Wesp and though it was informative for parents ("Baby's First Year: What to expect from birth to first steps," By Dr. Clyde Wesp, Cover Story, July issue). We wanted to add that it's those first steps parents should be very cautious of baby walkers. The American Academy of Pediatrics reported that baby walkers sent an estimated 8,800 children younger than 15 months to the hospital in 1999. The AAP injury prevention program literally states. "Do not use a baby walker." If parents are going to use a baby walker they need to follow safety guidelines. These guidelines are provided by www.surebaby.com;
We must also add that, anecdotally, we have seen children in ill-fitting walkers develop "ice-walking." This is when the foot does not come in full contact with the ground and the child walks toe to toe. This can be a very difficult condition to treat. It should also be noted that any child that "toe-walks" should be thoroughly evaluated by a physician. Devon Glazer, Victor Cachia, Lorelei Achor Aloha Foot and Ankle Associates, Inc.
